Back in time, circa 1994,I was going over work I had done for the German company Bastei. These were a series of strips no longer than 8pp in length and the genre was spooky tales.
I'd noticed how,in films and on TV and even in comics, the religion was always Catholicism and the priest always weak. I wondered whatever happened to the good old Church of England and vicars? St Werburgh's Baptist Church had a real "fire & Brimstone" type vicar.
I thought what if we had a tall,muscle-bound vicar who had no fear of the Devil, his kith and kin? A vicar who had rightly earned the title "God's Demon-Thumper"?
The strips were done and each was self-contained but then I had this notion that the series needed an ending and as the dreaded Millenium was approaching I wrote and drew "Satan Comes Calling".
Could the Rev. Merriwhether possibly go toe-to-toe with Satan?
Ahhh, you'll have to wait til 2008 to see! But here are the first two strips. Click on each to see an enlargement!
